John Tierney – Review of: Male Pride and Female Prejudice

This was written as a review on John Tierney's piece in The Presence of Others fifth edition.

I can understand the statistics that were shared by John Tierney. What did we get from this? At the time of this article, there where more women in college then men. Women are more focused on obtaining a carreer than starting a family right away. Women are less likely to marry “down.” Down, speaking to the males income and education level being lower than the femals. Yes, all of these statements where true and even partially sourced.

John Tierney is an award winning writer although I won’t be the first to say he is “misinformed.” Joseph J. Romm also stated once that John is, “influential but misinformed” Joseph was discussing John’s book from 2007 Hell and High Water. Joseph’s comment is also very accurate to this writing but in this case because he is too narrow in his view of “eligible” canidates for the more demanding women of today.

John’s concern is that there will be more women single due to the increased criteria for a mate. What John missed though is that in 2014 there are more US men then there are women. In 2013 it was noted that a 7:10 ratio existed for women to men as entreprenuers. Looking at other income opportunities available and the ratio of male to female, there are still plenty of “qualified” canidates.

In addition to and for the fun of it – Men are different today too. Dad’s are now more involved in the family life.

Have you seen some of the advertisments speaking directly to dads?

Dads, well, we now are even allowed to show emotion. Times are changing; both women and men are seeking different qualifications in a mate than they did previously. There are still plenty of well qualified canidates for both man and women considering the overall population combined with ways to support oneself and family.

How about this to really through off all of it, John was only discussing male to female. How do we include in their number of qualified mates when thinking about female to female and male to male. I am not even going to try and start to look for ways to calculate out percentages but for every stat is another variable just waiting to throw a rock through a window.
